The early days of the “space race” between Russia and the United States were filled with excitement and quite possibly more than a bit of tragedy. The technology was new and the “learn as you go” approach made space exploration a highly dangerous endeavor for anyone who slipped the bonds of Earth. Rumor persists that a number of Russia’s brave cosmonauts perished during early flights.

Two Italian radio aficionados claim to have recordings of these tragic events, along with recordings of US space missions that appalled NASA when they discovered their “secret frequencies” had been hacked. The Russians took it even harder.

For over 60 years the plastic trash from around the Pacific Rim has been slowly accumulating at the junction of several ocean currents in the Pacific Ocean. Estimated at twice the size of Texas, this island of trash, known as the “Eastern Garbage Patch” is lurking about halfway between Hawaii and the mainland United States.

Worse than just sea-going litter, the toxins in much of this waste is finding itself entering the human food chain through the fish that absorb the floating bits. Only now are efforts being made to understand this mess, much less find ways to clean it up.
